The
"DRAWINGS OF GIBRAN: A HUMANE PERSPECTIVE" exhibition that was organized in collaboration with the Gibran National Committee (GNC) is the first exhibition for Gibran Khalil Gibran in the UAE, particularly in Sharjah.
It showcased 30 works and manuscripts that make use of different mediums including watercolour, oils, and charcoal on paper and canvas.
It was inaugurated on October 7th, 2015 by H.E Sheikh Khaled Bin Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Department of Seaports and Customs and attended by H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, H.E Sheikha Nawar bint Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Mr. Sami Nmeir, Consul General of Lebanon in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, Mr. Hisham Al Madhloum, Chairman of Sharjah Collections of the Art, Dr. Tarek Chidiac, President of the Gibran National Committee, Mr. Nagi kayrouz, Treasurer of the Gibran National Committee, Mr. Joseph Geagea, Director of Gibran Museum, Mrs. Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Department, and Mrs. Alya Al Mulla, Curator of Sharjah Art Museum.
The works on display demonstrated clearly the Arabic and Western influences in Gibran’s art, and included his 1916 watercolour, Face of a Veiled Woman, a charcoal self-portrait from 1908 and an oil painting from 1910 called The Sad Mona Lisa…
At the inauguration of the Exhibition, MRS. Manal Ataya, Director General of the Sharjah Museums Department, said: “We are very proud to be hosting this fascinating exhibition which gives visitors a unique chance to see, and better understand, impressive and important aspect of the artistic work, of one of the Arab world’s most noted artists and thinkers.
“Our collaboration with the Gibran National Committee in Lebanon has enabled us to bring this prestigious exhibition to the UAE for the first time.
“It underlines Sharjah Art Museum’s growing role as an important venue to organize and host such significant exhibitions, and helps emphasize Sharjah’s reputation as a regional centre of art, culture and tourism.”
Dr. Tarek Chidiac, President of the Gibran National Committee, added: “Sharjah is increasingly known as a cultural hub with its own rich heritage, and also as a venue hosting the best in regional and international art – both traditional and contemporary.
“So for us it was the obvious choice to stage an exhibition of work by one of the most significant artists and literary figures to come out of the region.”
On Friday, 13th November, 2015, at the: “Art talk for the exhibition” event that was organized by the Sharjah International Book Fair and the Gibran National Committee at the Book Forum , Moderator Dr. Omar Abdulaziz, Head of the Research and Studies Section at the Sharjah Department of Culture and Information took part in addition to Dr. Tarek Chidiac, President of Gibran National Committee and Mr. Joseph Geagea, Director of Gibran National Musuem as speakers.
